A Glimpse from the Past
"Anjali… I saw him!"
I leaned against the balcony railing, watching the gentle drizzle as I held the phone to my ear.
"Saw who? Karthik, the architect? Don't tell me you're starting that old phase all over again, Ananya!" Anjali teased from the other end.
"No, nothing like that. I just happened to run into him," I chuckled, ending the call before she could probe any further.
It was incredible how fast time had flown. Ten years had passed since my family relocated from Kochi to Bengaluru right after high school. With that move, whatever fragile connection we had simply faded away.
Memories rushed back—those quiet evenings when I used to stand by the window just to watch him ride his bicycle back from school. Was it love back then? Never. To me, he was just a person I deeply admired, someone I quietly wished to be close friends with. Even when my classmates teased me, my intentions remained simple: I only wanted his friendship.
A Decade Later
Between earning my degree and navigating a hectic career in IT, a decade drifted by. Eventually, a transfer brought me back to my hometown in Kochi, and with it, faces from the past resurfaced.
One evening, while enjoying the cool sea breeze along the Marine Drive walkway at sunset, a familiar voice caught me off guard.
"Ananya... right?"
I turned around. Standing there with dark-rimmed glasses and a gentle smile was Karthik.
"Karthik! What are you doing here?" I asked, slightly caught by surprise.
"I’ve been working around here for a while. Weren't you in Bengaluru? When did you get back?"
"Just a few days ago... I moved back permanently."
"That's wonderful! Would you like to sit down and catch up? Let's grab some tea." His smile felt warmer and more genuine than ever.
An Unexpected Confession
We sat by a small seaside café, the sound of the backwaters setting the mood. Yet, beneath our casual catch-up, there was a steady, quiet intensity in his eyes.
"Ananya… after you left for Bengaluru, I tried looking for you everywhere. Through mutual friends, social media—everything. But I never managed to reach you."
"You were looking for me? Why?" I asked, genuinely puzzled.
Karthik paused for a moment, looking straight at me.
> "When you left, I realized how much you truly meant to me. Back in school, I was always too hesitant to speak up. Over the years, I met many people, but no one ever left the kind of impression you did. I stayed single all this time, holding onto a quiet hope that one day our paths would cross again."

His words left me speechless. What I had always brushed off as a simple, unsaid friendship had meant something entirely different to him: it was love.
A New Chapter
At first, I didn't know how to process his feelings. But as the days turned into weeks, being around Karthik brought an undeniable sense of peace and comfort. We spent long evenings walking along the coast, reminiscing about the past, and laughing without reservations.
His quiet care and genuine nature began to change how I felt. Beyond just a friend from my past, I began to see someone with whom I could build a future.
One Sunday evening, as the sky turned crimson near the old boat jetty in Fort Kochi, his close friends were waiting for us.
Against the rhythm of the waves, Karthik turned to me, holding a small velvet box.
"Will you walk with me as my best friend and partner, for the rest of our lives, Ananya?"
All the lingering doubts dissolved in an instant. Looking into his eyes, I placed my hand in his and smiled.
"Always... and forever."
What started as a quiet, unspoken friendship turned out to be destiny’s way of bringing two hearts together.
