TO LOVE, WITH LOVE

Dearest Julian,
I write these words not with the hope that they will safely find their way to your hands, nor that you are even in a state to read them, but because my soul demands an outlet. Let this parchment carry my truth across the quiet dusk—a testament to a love untainted by ideology, borders, or the madness of men.
My memory constantly wanders back to our very first morning together by the coast. You approached me holding a handful of wild lavender, softly asking if I would walk down to the harbor with you. I remember blushing, sheepishly admitting that I preferred the quiet of the sanctuary gardens to the bustle of the docks. We stood there in a breathless silence that felt like a quiet eternity. In that still moment, watching the wind ruffle your hair and seeing the gentle warmth in your eyes, I knew I had found my home. What began as a quiet affection quickly became the very air I breathe—the sole comfort sustaining me through every trial.
Even now, amidst the heavy stench of ash and iron that clings to this camp, the faint memory of that lavender wafts through my mind, bringing back the very same warmth to my cheeks.
Our love is the open sea reaching for the sky,
The quiet breeze where sorrow learns to fly;
It sings in the rain upon the stone,
A language belonging to us alone.
I do not know what awaits us beyond this earthly suffering, but of this I am certain: whether we are granted decades together or our lives are cut short before this conflict ends, what we share is immortal. The soldiers who separated us possess the power to bind our bodies, but they cannot touch a devotion rooted so deeply in the sacred fabric of existence.
I feel no malice toward the guards who enforce our captivity. I feel only pity. They live in a darkened world, blind to the truth that lies beyond hatred—a world where soul meets soul without labels, ranks, or doctrines. How tragic that in their attempt to cage us behind barbed wire, they fail to realize they are the ones imprisoned within the narrow walls of their own cruelty.
My body grows weaker with each passing day of forced labor, and my hands tremble as I hold this pen. Yet, a fierce strength remains inside me. Beneath my heart beats the small, fragile life we created together—our little spark of hope expected this coming winter. It is for this child, and for the memory of your tender embrace, that I force my feet to stand each morning. I will endure whatever comes, holding on until I bring our little miracle safely into this world.
I must hide these pages now before the night patrol passes. Though the sky above us is choked with dark smoke, the light within my spirit remains bright. I will keep fighting with every breath I have left.
Yours eternally,
Evelina Vance
