Setting: A mist-shrouded plantation village in the high ranges of Munnar.
Context: Eerie occurrences during a holiday gathering at a neighbor's ancestral home that escalate into a terrifying haunt.
It was during a festive evening that my family and I were over at Mrs. Clara’s ancestral bungalow, playing cards. Out of nowhere, an inexplicable coldness washed over me, accompanied by an overwhelming gut feeling that I needed to check the hallway.
Following the sensation, I walked down to the furthest master bedroom at the end of the corridor. From the attached bathroom, I heard the frantic cries of my one-year-old nephew. I rushed in to find him sitting inside the massive clawfoot bathtub, weeping in terror. I knew for a fact he couldn't have climbed into it on his own—the tub was far too tall, and he wasn't even able to climb into the smaller ones back at our house.
I immediately pulled my son, Aarav, aside and asked if he or his friend had placed the toddler there. Aarav swore up and down that they hadn't left the adjoining room the entire time. I knew my son’s subtle physical tells whenever he wasn't being truthful, and none of them were present. He was telling the truth.
A few days later, I brought it up to Mrs. Clara. "There’s something unnatural residing in your home," I warned her. Being a night owl who frequently stepped outside for a breath of late-night air, I had often noticed the heavy window curtains of her dark, locked rooms moving when everyone inside was fast asleep.
Mrs. Clara’s face went pale, and she confessed that strange things had been happening for months—doors opening and shutting on their own, disembodied footsteps, and a suffocating aura of hostility whenever she was home alone.
I advised her on a few cleansing rituals—burning incense, smudging the space, and firmly asserting that the entity was unwelcome and had to leave.
She followed my advice. For two days, there was absolute calm. But then, the entity retaliated. Objects began flying off tables. The breaking point arrived when a heavy bathroom mirror detached itself from the wall and shattered into pieces across the floor.
Terrified, she turned to a local priest to perform a solemn blessing over the entire estate. Following the ritual, the interior of her house finally returned to peace.
However... the entity didn't leave the premises entirely. It simply moved outside.
Now, it lingers around the perimeter between our properties. I can feel its unseen eyes watching me from the shadows. Soon, subtle signs began to manifest. We would hear heavy footsteps coming up the wooden porch steps, but whenever we checked the window, the porch was empty. Even the dogs would growl at the empty yard. The screen door would swing wide open and slowly latch shut—even on dead-calm nights without a whisper of wind.
My brother, Rohan, a staunch skeptic, came out of his room pale and shivering one evening. He asked if anyone had walked into the bathroom while he was showering, claiming the door unlocked, opened, and closed twice on its own.
I walked into his room, stood in the chill, and spoke firmly into the dark: "You are not allowed inside this house. Leave and never return."
Since then, the entity hasn't crossed our threshold, but the outdoor activity persists. Even on sweltering afternoon days, whenever that unseen presence passes by me in the yard, an unnatural, bone-chilling cold instantly wraps around me.
Trapped on the boundary of our home, the entity continues to wait in the cold... leaving us to wonder how long the threshold will hold.
