The Return & The First Dreams of Cynthia
farewell for Cynthia and her four closest friends—Chloe, Emma, Liam, and Noah. Months of planning had finally turned into a scenic drive through misty mountains and winding valley roads, filled with music, laughter, and high spirits.
As night fell, the weather turned harsh. Dense fog rolled over the hills, accompanied by a heavy downpour that obscured the road. Cell phone signals faded to zero. Realizing they were lost in a remote valley bordering a dense forest, their driver guided the bus up a narrow path, coming to a halt before a massive, secluded mansion hidden behind overgrown trees.
"We will stay in this mansion for the night and leave at first light," the guide suggested. Driven more by thrill than fear, the group agreed.
Pushing open the heavy, rusted iron gates, they stepped inside. The air was cold and stagnant, carrying a strange mix of aged wood, a faint scent of withered spring flowers, and a subtle, metallic decay. While the group settled in the main hall with candles and laughter, Cynthia’s curiosity drew her away. Guided only by her phone's flashlight, she wandered up the grand wooden staircase to explore the upper floor.
At the far end of a dark corridor, a door stood half-open. Drawn by an inexplicable pull, Cynthia stepped inside. The room was frozen in time—a dust-covered wardrobe, an ancient wooden bed, and a vanity table. When her flashlight beam swept over the table, something caught the light.
Resting on the dusty surface was a pristine silver necklace, completely untouched by dirt. At its center sat a deep, blood-red ruby. It radiated a haunting beauty that hypnotized her instantly.
"Who could have left something this beautiful behind?" Cynthia whispered to herself.
An overwhelming urge to take it seized her. Unbeknownst to Cynthia, the necklace was no mere trinket—it had belonged to a young woman who had suffered a devastating heartbreak in that very room decades ago and brought her life to a tragic end. Without telling her friends, Cynthia slipped the necklace into her bag.
The moment the necklace was lifted, the atmosphere shifted violently. The tall windows slammed shut with a deafening crash. The temperature in the room plummeted, and Cynthia felt an icy breath brush against the back of her neck, as if someone were standing right behind her. Panicking, she bolted out of the room and rushed back downstairs.
By dawn, the rain had cleared, and the group left the mansion behind. But as their bus rolled away, Cynthia secretly placed the necklace around her neck. She had no idea that she hadn't just taken an antique—she had bound herself to a dark past, marking the beginning of a living nightmare.

The trip ended, and the group returned home to their normal routines. Cynthia kept the silver necklace hidden under her collar, wearing it every single day. She couldn't bring herself to take it off—it felt strangely warm against her skin, almost like a faint, rhythmic heartbeat resting right above her chest.
That very night, the nightmare began.
Cynthia woke up inside a dream, but everything felt terrifyingly real. She wasn't in her own bedroom; she was standing on a cobblestone courtyard outside the same secluded mansion, bathed in pale moonlight. Beside her stood a tall young man whose face remained blurred in shadow. In the dream, her heart throbbed with an intense, overwhelming love for him.
"I will always come back for you," the man whispered, his voice smooth yet distant.
He reached out, his fingers gently brushing her cheek before wrapping his hands around the red ruby pendant hanging from her neck. But suddenly, the warm dream dissolved into a cold nightmare. The man’s face twisted into an expression of cruel betrayal. He pulled away, stepping into the darkness alongside another woman.
Cynthia felt a sharp, suffocating pain in her chest—a heartbreak so raw and devastating that she couldn't breathe. Her hands flew to her throat as the crimson ruby on the necklace began to pulse with a dark, angry light.
She bolted upright in her bed, gasping for air, her pajamas drenched in cold sweat.
The room was silent, save for the ticking of her clock at 3:15 AM. Cynthia reached for her neck; the silver chain was burning hot against her skin. When she stood up and walked over to her bathroom mirror, her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes looked hollow, surrounded by dark circles, as if she hadn't slept in weeks. But more terrifying was her reflection: for a fraction of a second, the face staring back at her in the glass wasn't her own. It was the pale, tear-streaked face of a stranger with hollow black eyes.
Cynthia panicked and tried to unclasp the necklace, but the metal clasp refused to budge. No matter how hard she pulled, the chain held tight around her throat, tightening just enough to warn her to stop.
The next afternoon at college, Chloe and Emma noticed the drastic change in their friend. Cynthia sat at her desk, staring blankly out the window, completely detached from their conversation.
"Cynthia, are you okay?" Emma asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You look exhausted."
Cynthia turned slowly, her eyes cold and distant. "I'm fine," she murmured in a voice so low and monotone that it gave Chloe goosebumps. "I just... keep remembering someone I lost."
Chloe and Emma exchanged uneasy glances. Cynthia had never suffered a tragedy like that. Something was terribly wrong, and the dark curse attached to the necklace was only just beginning to take root.

As days passed, Cynthia’s life began to slip out of her control. Every night, the strange dreams of heartbreak haunted her, but now those experiences were no longer confined to sleep—they began bleeding into reality.
Cynthia started sleepwalking. On some nights, her family found her standing in front of the mirror, brushing her hair and weeping inconsolably. On another night, they caught her drawing a terrifying picture on the wall—a weeping girl with tears streaming down her face, identical to the ghost from the mansion. Yet, when morning came, Cynthia remembered none of these events.
The ruby necklace seemed fused to her skin. Whenever she attempted to force it off, her airways constricted, causing her excruciating pain.
One evening, her friends—Chloe, Emma, Liam, and Noah—came to her house to check on her. Cynthia’s behavior was deeply unsettling.
"Cynthia, where did you get that necklace?" Chloe asked suspiciously. "Did you take it from that mansion?"
Cynthia went dead silent. Her eyes darkened to a jet-black void. Suddenly, she spoke in a grave, resonant voice—a voice that did not belong to Cynthia.
"He betrayed me... He promised to love only me, and then he left with another... He gave me this necklace!"
Liam and Noah stepped back in horror. Enraged, Cynthia slammed a glass off the table, shattering it across the floor. Her facial features twisted into something menacing. Seconds later, she collapsed onto the ground. When she opened her eyes, she was completely oblivious to what had just happened.
Her friends realized a dark entity was consuming Cynthia, and that the old necklace was the conduit. They had to uncover the truth before her soul was completely suppressed
Cynthia’s condition deteriorated by the hour. Determined to save their friend, Chloe, Emma, Liam, and Noah drove back to the remote mountain village where the mansion stood.
Upon arrival, they questioned the elderly locals about the estate. An old local historian finally revealed the tragic truth.
Decades ago, a gentle young woman named Eleanor lived in that mansion. She fell deeply in love with a man who ultimately betrayed her for a wealthy woman. Wearing the silver ruby necklace he had gifted her, Eleanor succumbed to despair and ended her life in the upper-floor room. Before she died, her tears and thirst for vengeance seeped into the ruby pendant. From that day on, anyone who took the necklace would be possessed by Eleanor’s vengeful spirit.
Horrified, the group rushed back to Cynthia’s house, only to find a scene of utter horror.
The bedroom was pitch-black. Strange, blood-red markings were smeared across the walls. Cynthia stood in the center of the room, her hair disheveled and her eyes completely blacked out.
"You are too late..." Eleanor’s sinister voice echoed from within Cynthia. "This body belongs to me now! I am going to find the last descendant of the man who ruined me!"
Eleanor had taken full possession of Cynthia to exact her final revenge. The necklace dug deeper into her throat. Time was running out; if they couldn't appease Eleanor's spirit immediately, Cynthia would be lost forever.

The room temperature plummeted to a freezing cold. Fully possessed by Eleanor's spirit, Cynthia threw Liam and Noah against the wall with supernatural force. Her eyes burned with pure rage and heartbreak.
"She's going to commit murder using Cynthia's body! We have to do something!" Chloe screamed in terror.
Emma suddenly remembered a crucial detail the historian had mentioned: To grant Eleanor peace, the necklace must be returned to the mansion room, and her memories laid to rest.
Without hesitation, Liam and Noah restrained Cynthia using all their strength. Emma sprinkled holy water over her. As the spirit shrieked in pain, they forced Cynthia into the car and drove frantically through the stormy night back to the mansion.
Navigating the dense fog and torrential rain, they dragged Cynthia back up the creaky stairs into the ruined bedroom. The moment they stepped inside, Eleanor’s spirit fought back with violent intensity.
"You cannot stop me! He will pay for what he did!" Eleanor roared through Cynthia's throat.
"Eleanor... we understand your pain!" Chloe cried out to the spirit. "But this innocent girl had nothing to do with your past! Your love was pure—don't let vengeance ruin it!"
Emma uncorked an ancient incense burner given by the historian, filling the room with sacred smoke. As Eleanor inhaled the smoke, Cynthia’s physical strength began to wane. Seizing the opportunity, Noah and Liam grabbed hold of the necklace. Surrounded by their prayers and tears, the crimson light of the ruby began to fade.
"Eleanor... find your peace..."
With a loud crack, the clasp snapped open, and the necklace fell to the floor! The ruby pendant shattered into tiny fragments upon impact.
A soft, mournful sob echoed through the room. A pale white mist drifted out through the open window and dissolved into the night sky... Eleanor’s soul was finally liberated.
Cynthia collapsed, unconscious. When she woke up at dawn, the dark hollows under her eyes were gone. She was back to herself. Yet, the memory of the necklace and the old mansion remained a dark shadow that would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
