The Light on the Porch english story
It was a chilly, rain-soaked evening in the quiet hills of Wayanad. Arjun pulled his car over near a deserted bus shelter on the edge of a winding road. He had driven up there just to escape the chaotic noise of the city and find a few moments of peace.
Sitting in a dark corner of the shelter was an elderly man wearing a tattered old coat. He was barefoot, his face worn with years of hardship. People kept passing by in their vehicles, but no one ever stopped or looked his way. There was a profound sadness in the old man's eyes, as if he wanted to reach out, yet he remained completely silent.
Curiosity got the better of Arjun, and he returned to the same spot the following evening. To his surprise, the old man was still there, sitting in the exact same place with the same heavy sorrow in his eyes. As Arjun walked closer, he noticed a large, disfigured hump on the man's back beneath his coat. Arjun realized that this physical deformity was likely why everyone ignored him—society often looks away from those who appear different. Indignant at how cold people could be, Arjun decided to break the silence.
Seeing Arjun approach, the old man quickly lowered his gaze. Arjun sat down beside him on the concrete bench and offered a gentle smile.
"Good evening, sir," Arjun said softly.
Unused to anyone addressing him, the old man looked up in utter shock. After a long pause, he offered a faint, timid smile back. They sat together and talked as twilight faded into a quiet, starry night.
"Why do you look so sad, sir?" Arjun asked gently.
"Because I am different," the old man replied quietly. "People don't see me; they only see what is wrong with me, so they choose to look away."
"Being different doesn't make you any less meaningful," Arjun reassured him. "To me, you look like a quiet guardian watching over this lonely road."
The old man looked at him, his eyes softening. "Do you really think so?"
"I do," Arjun smiled. "Like an angel sent to keep watch over weary travelers."
At those words, the old man slowly stood up. He unbuttoned his tattered coat and let it slide off his shoulders. To Arjun's disbelief, the heavy hump on his back unfurled into a pair of majestic, luminous wings that glowed softly in the dark.
"You are right," the old man said with a gentle twinkle in his eyes. "For once, someone stopped to care about another soul instead of thinking only of themselves. My work here is done."
Arjun stood frozen, entirely speechless. "Wait... why didn't anyone else stop to help an angel?"
The guardian angel smiled warmly and said, "Because you were the only one willing to truly see me."
In a flash of soft light, he vanished into the cool night breeze. Arjun stood alone in the quiet hills, knowing his perspective on the world had changed forever.
