Stars Beneath the Tide

Stars Beneath the Tide
The cool, salty ocean breeze brushed against my face as I stepped out of the station into the early morning air at Chennai Egmore. It had been four long years since I last walked through this city. I was traveling to attend the wedding of my college friend, Vikram. Beyond the celebration, it was supposed to be a grand reunion with our old batchmates. What I hadn't anticipated was that the reunion would begin long before the destination—right on the crowded station platform.
As I stood in line for the train, a figure two spots ahead caught my eye. The same posture, the same familiar stride. Curiosity held my gaze, and when she turned around two minutes later, my guess was confirmed. It was Arjun’s ex-girlfriend, Ananya. We hadn't crossed paths a single time since our college farewell.
She spotted me and offered a soft, unexpected smile. "Well, meeting sooner than expected. How have you been, Arjun?"
Her calm composure and striking presence caught me completely off guard. Flustered, I reached to adjust my shoulder bag, but it slipped from my grip, landing heavily on a passenger's foot behind us. The person let out an irritated yelp, drawing amused stares from the crowd. Ananya immediately stepped in, bending down to check if the traveler was okay and smoothing over the tense moment with easy grace.
As the express train rolled out, our hopes for a long conversation were constantly thwarted. If my phone wasn't ringing, hers was. Between work calls and noisy co-passengers, silence filled the gaps. Yet, every now and then, our eyes would lock, bringing back unspoken memories of the four years that had slipped by.
Midway through the journey, as the train sped along the coastal stretch of Tamil Nadu, torrential rains and sudden gale-force winds struck without warning. Before anyone could process the danger, a violent jolt shook the carriages, followed by a deafening screech—the train had derailed into a flooded marshland!
Panic erupted instantly. Screams echoed as water began gushing rapidly into the overturned coaches. Seated near the front, I managed to bracingly absorb the impact, but terror gripped my chest for Ananya, who was seated towards the rear.
Facing life and death in a split second, four years of hesitation vanished. My hands trembled as I pulled out my phone, typed out "I love you", and hit send. Seconds later, despite the chaos around, my phone buzzed with a two-word reply: "Me too."
That single message surged through me like adrenaline. I fought my way through the rising water inside the dark, tilted carriage. While passengers scrambled for the exits, I pushed deeper toward the back until I spotted her—she was desperately trying to free a fellow passenger trapped beneath a jammed seat.
Together, we managed to pry the metal structure loose, pulling the passenger clear. Swirling through the broken window frame, we swam toward the rescue boats waiting outside in the floodwaters.
Reaching the safety of the shore, we held onto each other, tears mixing with the rain, refusing to let go.
That terrifying ordeal reshaped our lives forever. Days later, we walked into Vikram’s wedding together, hand in hand. Sometimes, a single fateful hour can completely rewrite years of silence, giving love the second chance it always deserved.
