The Broken Vow
Sreepriya was a name known to everyone in town—the only daughter of the influential Gopalan Nair. Raised like royalty amidst immense wealth, her life was an unbroken stream of privilege. When the time came, her marriage was the grandest event the town had ever witnessed: 245 sovereigns of gold, a brand-new BMW, and assets running into millions. She was married to an engineer based in the United States and moved abroad with him.
The first six months were blissful. But when her father suddenly fell ill, Sreepriya had to return home to manage the family empire. Her husband stayed back. What began as a brief visit soon stretched into unending months. Amidst boardrooms and business accounts, an ache of isolation began to consume her.
Seeking an escape, she created a fake online profile, completely concealing her marriage and identity. That was where she met Arun, an unassuming twenty-eight-year-old from a modest background. Casual messages quickly turned into hours of intimate conversation. She painted a picture of a lonely woman detached from family, and Arun’s quiet sympathy soon deepened into genuine love.
Their first physical meeting at the Blue Pearl Hotel melted away the final barriers of hesitation. From that evening, their dynamic crossed every boundary, turning into a clandestine affair. Secret rendezvous at luxury hotels and stolen moments in her empty mansion became their reality. Arun believed he had found the love of his life, entirely unaware of the massive falsehood underpinning it all. Sreepriya simply feared that the truth would tear him away from her.
The illusion shattered one evening when Arun arrived at her residence. Finding the front door open, he stepped in, only to be confronted by Gopalan Nair.
"Who are you? What are you doing here at this hour?"
Hearing the voice, Sreepriya rushed down the stairs, her face drained of color. Before she could utter an explanation, Gopalan Nair’s phone rang—it was her husband calling from America.
He answered the call, his eyes fixed sharply on his trembling daughter and the bewildered young man beside her.
"Father, where is Sreepriya?" the voice on the other end asked.
Gopalan Nair paused, his voice chillingly composed. "She is right here... but there is someone else with her."
Arun froze as the brutal reality set in. The woman he adored was another man’s wife; every tender word had been anchored in deceit.
"Why did you lie to me, Sreepriya?" Arun asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"I was terrified of losing you," she wept.
"If you truly loved me, you would have trusted me with the truth," Arun replied quietly. Without looking back, he walked out into the dark.
Standing in the immense silence of her mansion—surrounded by overflowing gold, luxury cars, and vast fortunes—Sreepriya realized the one thing no amount of wealth could ever purchase: the fragile sanctity of uncompromised trust.
