Echoes in the Granite
High in the wind-swept pass of Alapa, where dusty gales swept across the desert border, stood an ancient masonry academy. Tariq was a student in the stone-carving wing, while Zainab spent her days shaping wet terracotta in the pottery courtyard nearby.
Overwhelmed by hesitation, Tariq never gathered the resolve to sit beside her. Instead, under the scorching afternoon sun, he would linger by the outer arches just to watch her turn the wooden kick-wheel. At the village craft fairs, he stood among the crowds admiring her finished jars, posing as an observer who understood the craft far better than he actually did. Once, when she left her clay-trimming tool behind and he handed it back, he had rehearsed a score of polite sentences in his head—only to remain completely silent as he returned it.
Time moved relentlessly. On their final day at the academy, Zainab arrived dressed in a traditional indigo robe. The sight of her scattered every word Tariq had planned to say, but he forced himself to speak his heart.
Zainab offered a soft, grounded smile and shook her head gently. "Tariq, your hands are meant to shape stone that reaches the sky. Master your craft first. Let your name cross this desert before you think of anything else."
Decades later, Tariq is the chief master builder responsible for the kingdom’s greatest monuments and palaces. Her parting advice became the steady anvil upon which he hammered out his path to excellence.
He does not search for Zainab today, nor does he wish to return to her world. Yet, inside every granite block he carves and beneath the shade of every grand dome he erects, the memory of that desert wind and her quiet counsel endures. Some connections are not meant to be held; they exist solely to forge our purpose and illuminate the horizon from afar.
