Under the Shoreline Moon

Under the Shoreline Moon

Venu could feel his pulse racing faster than the crash of the ocean waves outside. He held the worn paper in his hands, reading the lines he had memorized long ago.
Venu and Janaki lived in a small coastal village named Theeradesam near the Bekal fort in Northern Kerala. As a marine engineer, Venu spent months at a time on long merchant vessel voyages out at sea. On land, Janaki was his anchor, waiting faithfully for his return.
His eyes drifted over the yellowed letter—a note she had slipped into his pocket right before he left for the docks years ago:
"To Venu,
To be hopelessly yours is my fate, and I embrace it with my whole heart. The thought of living a life without you terrifies me. How could I ever navigate the hard days without the comfort of your soothing words? It is under the strength and warmth of your touch that I feel completely whole as a woman.
I am yours, completely and surrender to this love. When we hold hands, I know we have the strength to weather any storm life throws at us. I trust you entirely, and there is nothing I wouldn't do to give you joy or ease your pain..."
Throughout every voyage—amidst howling winds, cold nights, and endless horizons—those words had kept Venu anchored.
A quiet creak interrupted his thoughts as Janaki stepped out onto the porch. The pale moonlight illuminated her silhouette, her saree fluttering gently in the sea breeze. After months at sea, seeing her standing there under the open sky brought tears to his eyes.
He walked over and pulled her close without saying a word. Janaki rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart.
"I could never survive those endless months at sea without you, Janaki," Venu whispered softly into the quiet night.
"I know," she murmured, holding him tighter. "As long as we lean on each other, not even the ocean can keep us apart."
As the illuminated tide pulled back into the sea, they stood together in the stillness of the night, bound by a love that time and distance could never break.
