As the early morning fog settled over the town, twenty-nine-year-old Thankappan (popularly known as "Thanku") felt an uncharacteristic jolt of excitement. Usually a late riser, today was very special. He had a gun in his pocket and a grand blueprint for financial freedom in his mind. But as the two-toned police jeep pulled up and a breathtaking woman in a cop uniform tapped on his window, his grand plan dissolved into pure infatuation. It was love at first sight.
"Morning, Officer," Thanku grinned, running a hand over his shiny bald head. "Is there any particular reason you're pulling me over?"
"Step out of the vehicle, you fool!" the officer barked sternly. "Do it now, or I’ll show you what this baton can do!"
"What if I told you I just fell in love with you?" Thanku asked smoothly.
The officer’s eyes welled up with dramatic tears. She turned away and wiped a tear. "I don't believe you... and judging by this rusted bucket of a car, you're either dirt poor or just have terrible taste." Suddenly, she broke into a wide smile. "God, I'm awful at staying serious. Was I convincing or what, Thanku?"
"Babe, you were awesome."
She spat her chew onto the gravel and grinned. "Alright, let's go rob the State Bank downtown. Time to make some real cash!"
That was Neethu. She had stolen a police cruiser on a whim and had zero qualms about joining Thanku on a high-stakes heist.
En route to the bank, Thanku’s phone rang. It was her, calling from the cruiser ahead.
"Hey, once we grab the cash, we're driving straight down to Goa and living like royalty, alright?" Thanku said into the mic.
"Sounds like a plan, bhaiya! But first, I really want to arrest someone like a real cop. Just for fun!" Neethu giggled over the line.
She suddenly flipped on the siren and swerved hard into a side alley. "Hey! Don't ruin the timeline!" Thanku yelled into the phone, frantically trying to keep up.
Meanwhile, parked in a dusty lot nearby, two low-level smugglers, Sabu and Babu, were frantically shoving contraband bags into the back of their van. They froze as Neethu’s police jeep screeched to a halt right in front of them.
"Oh no, the cops!" Sabu panicked, pulling an old rifle from under the seat and aiming it straight at Neethu.
Thanku pulled up a second later in his beat-up sedan and nearly had a heart attack. Neethu was at gunpoint! He slowly stepped out, pulling his small pistol from his waistband.
"Don't shoot, Officer!" Neethu cried dramatically, dropping to the floor. "I'm not a real cop, I swear!"
Sabu trained his rifle on Thanku instead. "Who the hell are you then? And what’s inside the trunk of that police car?"
"You don't want to open that, man, it’ll ruin your life," Thanku warned. But Sabu forced the latch open anyway.
Bound and gagged in the trunk lay Sub-Inspector Velayudhan, sweating profusely and glaring daggers.
"Wait, is that the local Inspector?" Sabu asked, stunned. He turned his rifle back on Thanku with a menacing grin. "Well then, looks like we’re joining your heist. Cut us in, or you don't leave this lot alive."
Left with no choice, Thanku absorbed them into the crew.
Inside the bank, the manager and the security guard were embroiled in a petty argument when Thanku and his ragtag squad burst through the doors, face masks on and weapons raised.
"Nobody move! Hands up! Where’s the vault cash?" Thanku bellowed.
"You can't open the main vault right now," Keerthi, the calm lady teller, said nonchalantly. "The automated security system locked it the moment you walked in with weapons. But I have the key to the secondary floor safe. Give me a 20% cut, and I'll crack it open for you."
"Are you serious right now?" Thanku blinked behind his mask.
Suddenly, a customer lying on the floor looked up and recognized him. "Wait... Thankappan? Is that you, man?" It was Prakash, his old high school classmate.
"Thankappan?" the teller giggled. "What a lovely name! Cut me in, or I’m shouting his full name to the cops."
Before Thanku could process the blackmail, the bank security guard stepped forward, raising his own revolver. "Hey, I want a cut too!"
The robbery was devolving into a chaotic negotiation. Everyone wanted a piece of the pie. Thanku quickly stuffed the trash bags with cash from the secondary safe and motioned for everyone to head toward the exit.
Just as they reached the glass doors, heavy boots echoed outside, and the doors were kicked wide open. Cops flooded the lobby, led by a very angry, recently freed Sub-Inspector Velayudhan.
"Hands in the air, Thankappan!" Velayudhan roared.
Thanku turned to Neethu nervously. "Babe... we're cooked."
Neethu instantly dropped her tough-girl act, smiled gracefully, and casually walked over to stand beside the police force.
"Hook, line, and sinker, Sir," Neethu reported with a crisp salute. "Undercover Agent Neethu Krishna, reporting! The suspect has been successfully apprehended."
Thanku’s heart shattered into a million pieces. The woman he had fallen head-over-heels for was an undercover operative all along! He realized now that the tall tales of his "mastermind criminal past" he’d bragged about at the local pub had led her straight to him.
"Nice try, Thankappan," SI Velayudhan chuckled, slapping the handcuffs onto his wrists.
Thanku took a deep breath, looked at the clinking cuffs, and shrugged. Well, prison wouldn't be so bad. At least he’d have an incredible love story to tell the rest of the inmates.
