Shades of Pine and Promises
The cool mountain air carried the crisp scent of pine as I took my evening walk through the quiet valley of Ooty. My phone rang, and I answered eagerly.
"Pritika! I saw Vikram today!" I said, holding back a gasp.
"Alright, here we go again. Are you going crazy over him like the old days?" Pritika replied with an amused chuckle.
"No way! I was just telling you that I spotted him. I'm not obsessed or anything," I laughed aloud, brushing it off.
Years had passed since we last spoke. Shortly after finishing my twelfth grade in my hometown, my father was transferred, and we moved to Chennai. Whatever distant connection Vikram and I had back then faded away completely.
Seeing him yesterday brought back a surge of childhood memories—how I used to wake up early just to catch a glimpse of him as he left for school, or how I would secretly peek through my window when he played soccer with his friends. Back then, my friends teased me endlessly, insisting I was madly in love with him. But the truth was simpler: I didn't want a romance; I admired him and genuinely wished to be his friend.
Over time, life took over. I threw myself into college and my career, and the naive excitement faded into maturity. I eventually moved back to this quiet hill town on a temporary work project.
The next morning, while walking through the central botanical garden, I bumped into him directly.
"Hey, Neelima! When did you get back to town?" Vikram asked, stepping up with a warm smile.
"Just last week for a project," I replied, my heart beating a little faster.
"Let's grab a coffee tomorrow morning at eleven. Catch up properly?" he suggested.
"Sure, sounds great!"
The next day, as we sat across from each other in a quiet cafe, Vikram looked straight into my eyes. His expression was far more intense than I had anticipated.
"Neelima, when you left all those years ago, I felt an emptiness I couldn't explain," he confessed softly. "I tried searching for you online and through mutual acquaintances, but I kept coming up empty. It took me a long time to realize that what I felt wasn't just friendship—I was deeply in love with you."
I sat frozen in surprise. All those years, I thought I was the one chasing a simple friendship while he remained indifferent. I never knew he held such strong feelings in return.
"Vikram, I always wanted to be your friend..." I said gently, placing my hand over his.
Over the following weeks, our brief coffee catch-up turned into long walks under the towering pine trees, warm dinners, and endless conversations. I experienced a side of him that was caring, attentive, and deeply sincere. The admiration I carried as a teenager slowly bloomed into real, unconditional love.
One evening, at the edge of a quiet meadow overlooking the valley, Vikram stopped and turned to face me. He knelt on the soft grass, holding out a silver ring.
"Neelima, will you share your life with me?"
With tears of joy welling up in my eyes, I leaned down and hugged him tight. "Yes, forever."
